TD-SCDMA Update

- According to EE Times-China, Chinese TD-SCDMA chipset solution provider Commit has released a new Mars-II chipset solution and reference design, which support TD-HSDPA, GSM, GPRS, and EDGE. Leveraging 90nm process technology, the new chip is able to fulfil the requirements set by telecom operators for their TD-SCDMA terminal devices, such as automatic switching between 2.5G and TD-SCDMA HDSPA, mobile TV functionality, and low-power consumption. New products equipped with Mars-II chipsets are scheduled to hit the market in the first half of 2008, in time for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

- China's ZTE recently announced that it will issue convertible bonds worth approximately four billion RMB (US$532.7 million; US$1 = 7.5 RMB), so as to raise funds for 11 construction and development projects. Three of these projects are related to TD-SCDMA HSDPA system equipment development.

- According to Xinhua PR Newswire, Chinese mobile phone maker Qiao Xing Mobile announced the launch of its new TD-SCDMA mobile phone - codenamed G100 - through its subsidiary CECT. Qiao Xing's new TD-SCDMA phone incorporates various 3G services: including videoconference and high-speed Internet access, as well as CECT's well-received features such as ultra-long standby time, voice recognition, and multimedia playback. A high-resolution camera is also included.

- China's ZTE announced on October 17 that it has developed a TD-SCDMA terminal device leveraging the MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) standard, a mobile TV standard originally developed for WCDMA by Datang Mobile, ZTE, TD-Tech, and Spreadtrum. More TD-MBMS products by other companies are projected to hit the market soon, Chinese-language Sina News reported, citing the general manager of ZTE's TD-SCDMA mobile phone division.

- On October 16, China's Datang Mobile announced at 2007 International HSPA Summit that its TD-SCDMA networks in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Baoding, and Qingdao now support HSDPA technology. Following this breakthrough, Datang is scheduled to roll out HSUPA service on its TD-SCDMA networks in 2008, China's Economic Daily reported.
